Like Coca Cola and Big Macs, business is here to stay. Although we can't say the same about most things eg. faxes replaced telexes, cars replaced the horse and buggy, Advanced Hair (Yeh! Yeh!) replaced the `wide hair part', and cottontails replaced bombay bloomers, business has been around since Eve was tempted by the snake. In fact, small business employs 78% of people in the workforce. So...the odds are, you'll be involved in business for the rest of your working life regardless if you own a business or work in one. Whether we like it or not we wake up in the morning, do whatever we do all day and then go back to sleep to start the process all over again. Now that I've painted the hard reality of your existence and destiny, don't pack your significant belongings in an overnight bag and credit card a first class passage in search of `Utopia'. You can find it right where you are now.

Firstly I'd like to ask you a question, how do you measure success in both your life and business? Here's a snapshot of achievements considered by society as benchmarks to success - They include:
  • keeping your head above water
  • reducing debts so you have more disposable income
  • there's not enough income so you go back into debt with another venture or expansion which should increase revenue
  • you replace the '78 Holden for the latest model but of course you now need two cars, you then buy a bigger house for the two cars
  • have renovations to make room for the accumulation of possessions which is annually viewed when you have the garage sale ....and so it goes on - it never stops.

Let's get down to basics - I urge you to think about what it is you want out of life. How do you see yourself and your business in the big picture? What contribution do you want to make to this planet? You see, success is in the daily `doing' not the `destination' because you can bet that when you think you've reached the finish line they've moved the posts. Nothing stays the same, we're all part of this infinite evolutionary path and there are no exceptions for the business environment. You need to be flexible to change, adopt a positive attitude of it's inevitability, and find a way to be happy and competitive in the process.

Although we fervently resist change and creatively justify the existence of the `old', we are always first in line for - the wizz bang new fax machine; latest model red car; a quick makeover at lunch time; and the in-vogue cottontails. This conflict of greed and need has been around since Adam and Eve and we all know....we can't have the apple and eat it too.
